Venice Italy Part 3 : The End

This is the western facade of the Basilica San Marco. It's the final resting place for St Mark. In AD 828, two Venetian merchants stole the body of St Mark from a monastery in Alexandra, ostensibly transporting it under layers of pork fat co conceal it from Muslim guards.

Campanile, the bell tower. One of the most recognized symbol of the city. Being in a vulnerable position on the edge of the lagoon, Piazza San Marco has been flooded by high tides throughout its history. The exceptional tide peaks that occur periodically is : Acqua Alta (Veneto term).

Campanile(大钟楼),是这个城市其中一个最广为人知的象征。

It's tiring. We went back to Rialdo area. We bought our favourite pork sausages, sat on the floor and had our lunch.

Photobucket

After had our sausages, we still sat there and enjoy the romantic view in front of us: the Grand Canal.

Photobucket

We were heading to the direction of our guesthouse. Normally, the way that we used to go to the Piazza San Marco, always different with the way that we used to go back to the guesthouse. It's because we followed the compass. Well, as I said, the map of Venice was not so complete. There were too many bridges to be incorporated into the map hence some of the bridges were not found in the map. Similar alleys are here and there, and everywhere in the Venice. How can people survive without a compass there???

Photobucket

Wow, it's just like the house that I always see from the western TV program......Country style~

Photobucket

Luxury gondola, parking beside a restaurant.

Photobucket

Arch bridge again.

It's evening. Before we went into teh guesthouse to pack our luggage and went to the train station, We looked back to the path that we went through for our 2 days 1 night in Venice. We took a deep breathe to save the smell of the sea into our memory.

Tips:

1) Venice is slowly sinking, 1/5 of inch a year.
2)The maximum depth of the lagoon is 15m.
3) On average, one in two families in Venice possess a pleasure boat.
4) The sea of Venice is safe for swimming. Venice closest beach is at the Lido.

~The end~

Venice Italy Part 2

This is our second day in Venice. We had buffet breakfast in the garden of the guesthouse. The so call "buffet breakfast" had different type of breads, jams, butters, cheese and bacon. Last night was cold. In Europe, we did not go out at night because we were not so familiar there and we both actually did not like night life. Therefore, we always went to bed early, to ensure we both were energetic for the next day itinerary. This photo, we took it near our guesthouse. Well, it's rare for us to use tripod. Previously, when we were in Rome, we did not even have a chance to take photo so, due to the insecure feeling in Rome.

We planned to pay a visit to Piazza San Marco again. We dropped by a lot of shops while we were on our way. Apparently, Venice really relies on the tourism industry here: besides restaurants, the rest are souvenirs shops. ALl of a sudden, I found a special shop. In front of the shop, stood a "witch". There was a big fat cat at the window. The color of the cat looks exceptionally match with the shop's decoration. The feeling given was ~ mysterious.

Photobucket

The cat is really cool. No matter how I tried, he still sat there.

Photobucket

Venice, is known as "City of Bridges". Every buildings are connected by bridges.

Photobucket

If you find a shop, that must be a souvenirs shop.

Photobucket

Romantic gondola. The gondoliers there wear uniform. A gondola with 11 m in length and 1.42 m in width, cost approaching Euro 25k.

Photobucket

It's really relax, another photo of us. We came to the narrowest point of the Grand Canal, again: In front of Rialdo Bridge.

Photobucket

Souvenirs stalls along the Rialdo Bridge.

Photobucket

Poety and pictureque of the "City of Water".

Photobucket

You can see a lot of arch bridges here.

Photobucket

You see, there's no any cars. This is the heaven for pedestrians. By the way, we were lost. Cool!We did not looks nervous even though we were lost because we had a compass with us ~

Photobucket

Relax, romantic......the best place for Honey Moon.

Photobucket

Suggestions:
1) Taking water bus is not a must in Venice. You wan try walking in Venice, it can be relax.
2) If you take gondola, the fee is quite costly (about Euro73 for 50 minutes ride), unless your ultimate purpose is just to try it out.
3) There are some other water transport, for example: Vaporetto.
4) Avoid bringing too much luggage firstly because it will be a hindrance in this car-less city (you will have to carry it yourself) and secondly because you'll want space for souvenirs.

Vaporetto.

Venice Italy Part 1

Seeing that much of masks, which city that you will relate them to? Haha! We were in Venice, a place where many people think it's romantic. Actually, we left Rome at about 650AM by taking Eurorail at the Roma Termini, heading to Station Venezia Santa Lucia. When we arrived at Venice, already about 1130AM. It's a city in a stunning lagoon. We walked to our guesthouse. Yes, we could only walked because there was no cars. We had been trying to look for the guesthouse for quite some time. Finally, we managed to locate it. I could not recall the name of the guesthouse, I just remember there was a violin (without string) hanged on the wall. The guesthouse was really small, only have few rooms. We left our luggage there and went out.

Photobucket

This is Rialdo Bridge. The design of this most famous Venetian bridge at the narrowest point of the Grand Canal was hotly contested - Finally won by Antonio de Ponte, who sucessfuly beat the leading 16th century architech Michelango, Sansovino and Palladio.

Photobucket

At the bridge, you can find a lot of stalls selling souvenirs: big masks, small masks, magnets with masks, murano glass products (chains, bracelets and so on), puppets and etc.

Photobucket

We were shock to find out that: The map with me, was actually not a complete map. All not the bridges in Venice was included in the map. Venice has a lot of bridges (both famous and unknown) to connect all the buildings. We also found out other maps have the same problem. Fortunately, we brought a compass.

Basilica San Marco, a Venice fairytale cathedral pure Byzantine in essence, under the hot sun. Here we come ~ Piazza San Marco.

Photobucket

Bell tower at the middle of the piazza. Incomparable view of the city and lagoon can be had by taking the elevator to the top of this bell tower.

Photobucket

We just walked there without any specific purpose. Well, it's really enjoyable and relax. I could never enjoy walking that much.
