Angels and Demons

(Pantheon)
(Vatican)
(Piazza Popolo)
(Castello di Saint Angelo)

Rome Italy Part (8) : Musei Del Vanticano (The End)

After we left Piazza Popolo, again we came to Vatican, because the Musei del Vaticano was closed yesterday. The Musei del Vaticano is a MUST SEE tourist spot here. The popes have been contributing great efforts in collecting all the artifacts from every corner of the world. The most interesting thing is: I saw a lot of artifacts that I ever read about in my Sejarah Dunia in 4th Form.

Laocoon, as 1 of antiquity's most famous sculptures, this 1st-century AD Trojan prophet and his sons being strangled by serpents as they try to warn against the besieging Greeks' sneaky gift horse.

There are 6 major departments in the museum: Museo Pio-Clementino, Museo Gregoriano-Etrusco, Raphael's Rooms, The Vatican Pinacoteca, Gregorian Egytian, and Sistine Chapel.

Photobucket

Still remember this painting? This is the painting that we ever see in our Sejarah Dunia text book. This is the masterpiece of Raphael : " The School of Athens". Then, I found that the painting is actually a mural on the wall of one of the display room in the Raphael's Room!

Photobucket

Who is this? He is Raphel himself ~ He drew himself in "The School of Athens". There are a lof of philosophers in the painting, please click here to check.

Photobucket

Who is this again? It's Mr Yap la......

Photobucket

Actually, the most famous department here is the Sistine Chapel. This is because there is a very pretty and great painting on the ceiling: "Genesis" by Michelangelo. The painting was presented in a very 3-D way. About 300 characters in the old testiment were pictured in the painting. Some smart tourists took out mirrors from their bag and admire the painting from the reflection of the mirrors. We were not allowed to take any photos there. Therefore, I could not share any photos of the wonderful painting. If you come here, remember to use your binocular scope to check: In the painting, Joshua and Adam's fingers connected, as if already touched each other, but in fact it's not.

This is the exit of the museum. I like the spiral stairs.

Photobucket

It's been a tiring day, time to eat. We ate pasta somewhere nearby.

Photobucket

After an exhausted day, we need to have hot shower. This is the bathroom of the hotel, quite stylish.

Photobucket

We need to have a good sleep, because the next day 6AM we need to leave Rome, and take train to our next destination.

Suggestions:
1) Remember to bring mirror and binocular scope.
2) Better study about the artifacts history because you visit the museum, in order to have interference when you see the real piece.
3) Please check the timetable online, before you visit. There are days when the museum close for public.
4)This is the official website: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Home.html

Rome Italy Part 7: Piazza Popolo

Not so far away from the Piazza Spagna, there is Piazza del Popolo. The first thing that draw your attention away, when you just arrive here, is the famous Twin Churches: separated by the Via del Corso, Santa Maria di Montesanto at the left while Santa Maria dei Miracoli at the right. In 17th Century, Bernini purposely designed the identical churches in order to let the piazza to have something special. When you check it precisely, you can find that the dome at the left is oval while the dome at the right is round. Yes, there are many differences if you are willing to check it thoroughly.

Photobucket

At the middle of the piazza, there is an obelisk. This is the location where Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta meet.

Photobucket

We felt lethargic. Hence, we decided to go back to the hotel and to come back here again the next day.

=============================================

The next day, we came back again. Besides the Twin Churches, there is another church here: Santa Maria del Popolo. "Angel and Demon", the famous novel by Dan Brown, ever mentioned this church.

This is Chigi Chapel, Bernini finished the job begun by Raphael.

Photobucket

You can easily find a lot of "skull" everywhere.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Crucifixion of St Peter, by Caravaggio.

Photobucket

Church organ.

Photobucket

The only feeling in the air: creepy.

Photobucket

The creepy feeling was getting stronger......Oh my God! The coffins were just on the floor and we were walking on top of the coffins!

Photobucket

After we went out from the church, again the Twin Churches drew my attention away. In order to accommodate the Twin Churches into the photo, Mr Yap had to squat while I had to really stand right in front of the lens.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Rome Italy Part 6: Piazza di Spagna

From Piazza Navona, we were heading to Piazza Spagna. No matter off peak or peak seasons, you always see a big crowd of people sit on the famous Scalla di Spagna (The Spanish Steps). The characteristic of Piazza Spagna is definitely the elegent, offcenter sweep of staircase.

Photobucket

Another most important thing here: La Barcaccia, designed by Bernini. Bernini designed the fountain as a memorial to Romans, because once there was a flood and after the flood there was a small rescue boat stucked at the location where the fountain stood. This is has been the famous landmark gather point for people.

Photobucket

There are alot of famous shopping streets in this area.

Photobucket

See, now you know why I said this area is CROWDED?Here, you can find Armani, Versace, Valentino, Prada and many other brands concept stores. Besides that, for people who aim for budget shopping, you can pay a visit to a nearby street Via di Gesu e Maria. No16 is a discount shop : Disount Dell Alta Moda. For me, I think that the stuff still expensive even after discount because we do not earn Euro, but Ringgit.

Photobucket

At the south of the piazza, stood the Collonna dell Immacolata. Every 8th Dec, the pope will come over here and the firefighter will climb to the top to put the flower on Mary's head, as a memorial of the Immaculate Conception.

Photobucket

Tell you up front it is EXPENSIVE~

Photobucket

Delicious chestnut. We could not resist the tempting aroma and thus we bought some to taste.

Rome Italy Part 5 : Piazza Navona

We left Pantheon and walked to Piazza Navona, a place full with baroque style. You can see lot of baroque masterpieces there. At the plaza, stood an obelisk and 3 fountains.

Photobucket

When I was trying to find the best angle to shoot this photo, there was a damn Black guy poke my bellybutton with his damn finger. I saw a blonde beside him, holding his hand. I looked around, there were only 2 asians: Mr Yap and me. Therefore, I could do nothing but just to eat the leek!

Photobucket

Photobucket

At the south of the piazza, there was Fontana del Moro.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Do you see a "Statue of Liberty" here? I always see a lot of street artists doing such thing in Europe. It's funny.

Photobucket

We felt hungry. We tried to search the restaurant around that area recommended by travel guide. Unfortunately, we failed to locate the restaurant.

Photobucket

We went back to the piazza. This is Sant' Agnese in Agone, desinged by Francesco Barromini. Right in front of the building, there was Fontana Quattro Fuimi, designed by Bernini. You could see a sculpture of the Fonata (which represent the Nil River) raise its hand to cover its eyes. According to some people, the sculpture delivered a messege of Bernini to complain Barromini's design (the Sant' Agnese in Agone) has ruined the overall view of Piazza Navona.

Photobucket

Finally we just simply found a resutarant nearby to have our dinner.

Rome Italy Part 4: Pantheon

At the South-West of the Fontanna di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), there is the Pantheon. From the map, it does not look that far......

Photobucket

This is the Pantheon, looks older than the Pantheon in Paris. Does it look small? Well, I actually tried my very best to stand in front of the lens and Mr Yap tried to get the best angle in order to accommodate the Pantheon and I into the picture~

Photobucket

Right in front of the Pantheon, there is an obelisk. There are a total of 13 obelisks in Rome, this is the 3rd obelisk I saw. The other 2 obelisks that I saw was located in front of the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica and at the center of the Piazza St Pietro.

Photobucket

The dome of the Pantheon, ever been the biggest dome in the world for about 1700 years. The oculus is the only source of light for the building.

Photobucket

At the center of the Pantheon, there is an altar where you can see the icon of the Maria and the Child.

Photobucket

The Pantheon was originally built as a temple to all the gods of ancient Rome. After that, it turned to be a church and finally it become a monument in which illustrious dead are buried. Among all the great man, Raphael's tomb is the most famous one. This photo was taken from the left of Raphael's tomb.

Photobucket

A close up of Raphael's tomb. Who is this guy? Still remember what we studied in our Form 4's World History textbook about Europe's art history? The famous masterpiece is <> which is currently kept in the Vatican Museum. In my following chapter of my Rome trip, I will mention again about this painting. This is because there is something interesting about the painting that I hope to share with you.

Photobucket

My Sony F88 compact digicam does not have wide angle lens, therefore we tried our best to snapshot the facade of the Pantheon from the best angle that we could.

Photobucket

The Pantheon is old. Does it because it has a lack of proper preservation? Free admission to the Pantheon, compared to the Pantheon in Paris which need to pay for admission fee. I think this is the reason?

Rome Italy Part 3 : Fontana di Trevi

We took the metro from Ottavio St Pietro station and left Vatican city.

We reached Fontana di Trevi ( Trevi fountain). This is the most beautiful fountain in Rome, built in 312 years.

Photobucket

You can see a lot of coins in the fountain. Tradition holds that if you throw coins backward over your shoulder, you ensure a return visit to Rome. Mr Yap and I made a wish, and if I am not mistaken we threw Euro1 coins. I think, if we had no money in Rome, we could just come to the fountain to collect the coins here.

The characteristic of this fountain: it just looks like an opera. The background building is actually a Palazzo Poli, with the Neptune standing at the middle.

Around the fountain, there are a lot of shops.

Photobucket

Around there we found a special shop. At the entrance of the shop, there was riding a bicycles while another puppet was just sitting there. The shop sells a lot of wooden stuff, for examples: wooden clocks, toys and so on.

Rome Italy (Part 2) : Vatican

Early in the next morning, we started up our journey excitingly to the Vatican.

Vatican, the smallest country in the world, is just surrounded by a wall. The small city is located in Rome as well.

Ever read Dan Brown's novel<<Angel and Demon>>? The novel is about Christianity and the story background took place in Rome and Vatican. By reading the novel, you can travel to Rome and Vatican, in the comfort of your arm chair. Yeah, we were there, with the hope to walk around Vatican just like Robert Langdon.

有没有读过Dan Brown的《Angel and Demon》?

We took MRT and exit at Ottaviano San Pietro station. While we were on our way walking to the Piazza San Pietro, we saw this special motorbike.

Photobucket

Wow ~ We saw the Papal Swiss guards.

Photobucket

Finally, we reached Vatican. This is the entrance at the right wings of the Piazza San Pietro (Saint Peter's Square).

Photobucket

Piazza St Pietro, with 4 columns of colonnades spreading from both left and right wings of the basilica. The colonnades was designed by Bernini. It is just like "the maternal arms of Mother Church" in Bernini's expression. On top of the colonnades were the 140 saints statues. In the photo below, shows the right wing of the colonnades. The big crowd of people was queuing to enter the basilica.

Photobucket

Europe's church normally has graveyard attached. Graveyard in San Pietro basilica buried the ex - popes. Here you can see a modern design tomb, but not the tomb of the pope who just past away ~ Pope John Paul II who passed away in the year 0f 2005. The tomb of the Pope John Paul II was not opened for photo shooting. I saw many people cried in front of his tomb, and a lot of white flowers there.

Photobucket

This tomb looks old, could have about 1000 years old? On top of the coffin there was the statue of the pope.

Photobucket

It's creepy! The coffin was standing "in" the wall.

Photobucket

After visiting the graveyards, we went into the basilica. What the bronze giant is? This is Baldacchino, built in year 1624, right over San Pietro's tomb. Actually, how big the bronze giant is?

Photobucket

The Baldacchino consists of 4 columns with twisting shape and a capital. The Baroque construction weighed 37000KG and itis claimed as the biggest bronze in the world. Bernini was the designer of this bronze when he was 25 years old. Romans like to grab materials from other places to build something, just like what I mentioned in my Rome Italy (Part 1) that the Arch of Triumph materials was taken from other old buildings. So as to the Baldacchino. The materials was taken from the ceiling of the Pantheon.

In front of the Baldacchino, there was the Throne of Saint Peter (Cathedra Petri),
a chair which was often claimed to have been used by the apostle, but appears to date from the 12th century.

A lot of people kissed the old man's foot. Haha, this is San Pietro's bronze statue.

Statue again? Yeah, when come to Europe, should learn how to appreciate their art. This is the Pieta, by Michaelangelo. Pieta is about the Virgin Mary cradled the dead body of Jesus.

After this status was displayed in the basilica for few days, rumors spread that the Pieta was not Michaelangelo's artwork but other people. Michaelango was mad about it. He took his tools and went to the basilica at night time and carved
“MICHEL ANGELUS BONAROTUS FLORENT FACIBAT” on the chest of the Virgin Mary. This is the only pieces of Michalangelo that has his signature. However, he felt regret after that thus he decided not to sign off his artwork anymore.

Another thing: Why the statue was put behind a glass wall? In year 1972, there was a guy screamed," I AM JESUS CHRIST" and broke the nose and fingers of the Virgin Mary with a hammer. After the case, the Pieta was protected behind a glass wall.

We were so lucky to witness a ritual in the basilica. They sang holy songs.....Later I will post the shor video.

Underneath the white cloud and blue sky, there the biggest church in the world stood. St Pietro Church took 176 years to complete its construction and here are the architects/designers involved: Donato Bramante, Bernato Rossellino, Antonio de Sangallo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Bernini, Francesco Barromini, Carlo Maderno, Giacomo della Port and Domenico Fontana.

At the middle of the piazza, stood an obelisk. The obelisk was brought to Rome from Egypt by the emperor Gaius Caligula at the Middle Ages. This is the one that never fall down among all the obelisks at the Middle Ages.

The dome dominated the skyline. Well, we did not went up to the dome due to the long queue.

Photobucket

If you climbed up to the dome, then you will find that the San Pietro Piazza looks like a "key hole". The photo below was downloaded from Wikipedia.

We actually planned to visit the famous Musei Vatican (Vatican Museum), which is just beside the piazza. Damn it, the museum was closed on that day (17 May 2007)! Harlo! Why the museum closed on different day in every month????? From the calendar below, you can see that:

There are 4 colors code (no color, blue, yellow, and green) indicating the opening time for the museum while red color means closed the whole day. For example: If you visit the museum on the days highlighted with no color, the admission time 10am-12.30PM (that means after 12.30PM the entrance will close, nobody can go in anymore) while the exit time is 1.45PM. Tips: In Italian, INGRESSO means entrance while USCITA means exit.

What to do? We and other tourists bought hotdogs at a stall in front of the museum, sat there and ate. I managed to snapshot some street photos. This is the wall of Vatican.

Photobucket

Since the museum was closed, therefore we walked down to the street, right in front of the facade of the San Pietro basilica. We saw a lot of people (I thought they were pendatang asing) was selling bags (those bags were not authentic branded bags).

Photobucket

We just went straight down to the street, and there we arrived at the Tevere River. This is Ponte St Angelo (St Angelo Bridge). There are 12 status of the apostles along the ponte.

Photobucket

Opposite the ponte, there was Castello di Saint Angelo (Castle St Angelo). The castle depicts its name from the huge bronze angel on the top of the castle. The castle was Hadrian's tomb. It was then became castle, jail and papal castle. Now, it is a museum.

Suggestions:
1) If you plan to visit Vatican, please go there early in the morning, in order to avoid big crowd. You will waste your time on queuing if you reach there late.
2) You should wear top with sleeves and your pants better longer than your knee level. Vatican is the head of the world Catholics churches, please show your respect.
3) You will spend the whole day in Vatican, because there are basilicas, art gallery and museum. Besides, there are tourists spots nearby.
4) I suggest you read Dan Brown's <> before you go Vatican. You will feel more exciting after you read the novel.
5) When in town, the Pope gives a mass audience on Wednesday morning. You can bring your souvevirs there to be "Kai Guang" by the pope, hahaha. By the way, you must book the free tickets in advance through the Prefecture of the Papal Household.
6) San Peter's basilica and Piazza San Pietro open 7am-7pm daily. Admission to the basilica is free. Admission Euro6 for the treasury and Euro6 for the dome.

Prefecture of the Papal Household
